You can't just read Harry Potter and move on with your life, and if you can, you'll never know love or friendship and I feel sorry for you. What matters is that the media we take in will powerfully influence who we are, and the younger we are, the more quickly and powerfully we are shaped by what we see. They still excited about Harry Potter and want to see more but I will wait.I honestly think this is sorta messed up.
Order of the phoenix: This is the first of the war against voldemort harry potter books. Children under 4 will not be admitted. Were her parents right in letting such a young child read these books?
Harry is honestly just moody in this one. Reading can still be a bit laborious at this stage and hearing texts come alive when read by a competent adult is one of the most powerful motivators ime. I then read this section about Harry Potter.
My mom and I decided that I would cover my eyes for a minute or two during the brief scene in Part 1, but besides that both parts were fine. I remember reading the Order of the Phoenix in 5th grade. Now I'm 17 and Harry Potter is still my favorite series.
I'm sorry, but not only are you giving him more mature and complicated stories to read way before he can understand, you are actively patronizing the series. No really guys I love Percy Jackson but the movies... well that’s another story) Also, with him have three significantly older siblings (I'm closest in age to him with two older brothers in their mid to late 20s) he understands things that are teenage and up. (Also, this week and last week there were some severe audio issues with the recording.

They are funny as well, and I dissagree with this article. Maybe the first two books can go younger but only if you as a parent are willing to do the teaching work required, reading and breaking down the meaning for your child.
I do agree that the books get darker as the series goes on, but, in my opinion, the age range for each book really just depends on how well the kid can handle scariness and darkness. You will be sad when this movie is over. Did I understand every little thing that happened when I read the book at seven?
We also decided after she finishes book two she can wait a year or two before trying the next one. The ALA ranks the series as YA for 12+, and all of the film's, particularly 3-8, are rated PG-13, with some having to have been cut extensively from R. Even the first two have high age ratings (9+) for solid PG films.
I LOVE THAT WHOLE SERIES!! I wasn't scared a bit and could handle the vocabulary in these books. It's also been amazing to have these fantastic conversations with her about how wrong it is to be prejudice (muggle hating in the books) and relate it to real life. Overall, I would just say think about yourself or your kid as a reader. I am a person who, when the book starts to get REALLY dark, just thinks to themself, "remember, it's not real". I useally read for a LONG time at night so :/.I think that it doesn't matter your age, it matters how emotionally mature you are. It is very dark though. I read the 1st and 2nd books in first grade and finish all of them by fourth. And then, when eventually he grows, he doesn't bother to read it again. Each time I've read the series, I find a sentence to re-interpret or a theme I may have missed. Colder or more suppressed emotional response is not better. Book 2 is also pretty older kid friendly.

They where so excited to continue seeing more about Harry Potter, that I let them see the second movie (the chamber of secrets) when we where at the airplane returning home. Thus we put more limitation in the movie-watching than with book reading.
Philosopher's stone: Rated PG, recommended age 9+ There is scary dementors, a darker plot and a lot of peril. I know some kids might get scared at that age so maybe 9/10 for them but I highly disagree that the order of the Phoenix shoukd only be read at age 13/14.ENL I respectfully disagree.
Obviously, they do get darker, but I was only allowed to read the first one at that moment. I have a DC the same age OP and agree it's Rainbow Fairies/Horrid Henry/Dennis the Menace/Magic Kitten-Puppy-Horse/Wimpy Kid for pleasure and reading alone at this age.I agree with what previous posters have said.
Films are a different beast.
