For more than two-and-a-half hours, he explored dozens of droll nooks and wry crannies from across his 40-year career, from early gems like "If I Had A Boat" to "The Queen of Know," an unreleased tune that might turn up on a new album, what would be his first since 2012.He mixed obscure tracks like the show-opening "Once Is Enough" with classics like "That's Right (You're Not From Texas)" and "She's No Lady," a Rodney Dangerfield-style blues from Lovett's 1987 album Performing on the next-to-last stop of his tour, Lovett sang with a slightly scratchy voice but was in fine form otherwise, joking relentlessly with his excellent Large Band and dancing with backing vocalist Francine Reed. He also gave them solos aplenty, including a new song sung and written by Duncanville native Keith Sewell and a lovely sax jam from Brad Leali, who is a professor at the University of North Texas when he isn't touring with Lovett.At their best, Lovett and company found the sweet spot between honky-tonk and big band jazz, occasionally branching off into gospel ("Church"), R&B ("I've Been to Memphis") and swaggering Chicago blues-rock ("My Baby Don't Tolerate").Yet some of the show's high points arrived in the subtle moments, as Lyle sent most of the musicians backstage and sang in pure, sweet harmony with just two of his mates.
