"Although they are relatively simple objects, black holes raise some of the most complex questions about the nature of space and time, and ultimately of our existence," he said. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a network of radio antennae around the globe, has captured the first image of a black hole event horizon.

"The team is also imaging the supermassive black hole at the centre of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Chandra has studied M87 many times over its 20-year mission and sees a much wider field-of-view than the EHT. The dark centre is not a black hole but indicates that stars are densely packed and fast moving Chandra has a much larger field of view than the EHT, so it can view the full length of the jet of high-energy particles launched by the intense gravitational and magnetic fields around the black hole at M87. Katie Bouman a PhD student at MIT developed an algorithm that pieced together the data from the EHT. No-one really knows how the bright ring around the hole is created. Without her contribution the project would not have been possible. This is because, for some unknown reason, the "ring of fire" around the black hole at the heart of the Milky Way is smaller and dimmer.
