The movie is amazingly realistic in regard to the technology used and in regard to the human characters. Writer-director Peter Hyams crafts a narrative that, although not devoid of tropes, presents familiar concepts in a new setting. An honest marshal in a corrupt mining colony on Io, Jupiter's sunless third moon, is determined to confront a violent drug ring even though it may cost him his life. What more do you want (Just check out the shuttle landing)? Connery portrays a man on the edge of retirement, lacking confidence, feeling like a loser. Outland. After his wife angrily deserts him, he waits alone for the arrival of killers hired by the company to eliminate him. My men are shit.' In this distant future , the police marshal is stationed at the remote mining colony on the Jupiter moon of Io , there happens weird events when miners begin suffering from confuse visions and rare breakdowns , as well surprising outbreaks and spells of insanity . Boyle, furious at the money he lost because of this, sends for bounty hunters to execute Connery.
The train is here replaced by a shuttle from a space station and the Far West by the set on a deep space mining outpost (Not Deep Space Nine). James Sikking (Hill Street Blues) and John Ratzenberger are in this one as well. The film is a Science Fiction remake of "High Noon"("le train sifflera trois fois" in French). Whereas “Alien” assumes the form of a slasher in space, “Outland” blossoms into a space Western. There's something sinister afoot on Jupitor's third moon of Io. "Robocop" ...grossalicious. After leaving the James Bond franchise in 1971, Sean Connery gave a number of notable performances in films such as The Offense and The Man Who Would Be King but Outland is really the film that started him on the comeback trail that culminated with his Oscar acceptance speech 6 yrs later for The Untouchables. 6 out of 8 found this helpful. However the crew and medical team pass these incidents off as normal occurrences. A doctor , Dr. Lazarus (Frances Sternhagen) , ultimately risks death to give him a hand . With the late 70's giving us Star Wars and Alien, these films inspired a barrage of filmmakers to have a more realistic edge with sci-fi. It's up to stalwart, morally sound and responsible Marshal William T. O'Niel (a characteristically strong and personable performance by the always dependable Sean Connery) to lay down the law and put a stop to things before they get any worse.

He has recently been stationed in charge of a mining colony on IO, which is one of the moons orbiting Jupiter. As it is, it comes across as a simple space retelling of High Noon, with slightly too many darkly lit scenes and a slow burning pace that never quite kicks into a satisfactory gear. It's not really, but there are certain plot similarities. Often this is regarded as HIGH NOON in space, and to a point it is very western flavored not to mention has elements one might could possibly claim as lifted from that classic Zinnemann film. 17 out of 23 found this helpful. The film is quite misanthropic actually. Was this review helpful? This film doesn't show off fancy effects but instead makes this outpost ugly, grimy, and very junk-metallic. In lieu of a comely ingenue on the spacecraft to take the Marshall's mind off his job, we get Ms. Sternhagen as a wise, prophetic ship's doctor of a certain age,to whom he instantly takes a liking, if only because she isn't handing out the boilerplate crap he's getting from all the higher-ups. Even though this is in a futuristic sci fi setting, the message is still relevant in contemporary times. Eschewing the fantastic likes of sci-fi such as STAR WARS, OUTLAND goes for a grim and gritty approach to man's exploration of the universe – it has a similarly realistic look to it as ALIEN.
