I also wish their was more OPNThe album sounds somewhat monotone but at the same time it works so well and fits the concept behind it. It's not like they thought it was hot garbage, it just didn't capture them like it did me. But something just isn’t clicking with me on this album. Fantastic production and theme.I was in love with Drogas Waves after it dropped, then saw the lukewarm reviews for it and thought people were missing something too. Starboy was a mixed bag with some gems in there, and I felt My Dear Melancholy was okay. But they seemed a little weak to me, songwriting wise, and sounded more like fans service for Trilogy fans. Mapes tweeted Tuesday she’s received ‘more Twitter threats to roll up and harm me than I could stomach to go through.’‘I’ve gotten too many emails saying some version of, “you are an ugly fat bitch who is clearly jealous of Taylor, plz die,” which is not the first time I’ve heard that from pop stans…’ she said.‘It sucks to be scared of every person milling about outside or feel like you can’t answer the phone. It’s so cohesive. Taylor Swift fans share music critic’s address, phone numbers and threaten to burn down her home hours after she gave the singer’s new album an 8/10 review that followers deemed that was not enough. I enjoy the synths and his voice has never been better. This After Hours, though, isn’t particularly wed to a specific place (though there is a song called “Escape From LA”), nor does it capture the film’s screwball energy. I started following him around 2013 and all the mixtapes + BBTM were essential parts of the soundtrack to my high school life. Still, the escapist hedonism and self-loathing toxicity endemic to the music of artists like The Weeknd or Future is something I find engaging and enjoyable. The deluxe tracks are strong too. But yeah, she's for sure B-list at best. Currently on my 39th listen, this is a benchmark for all upcoming albums to beat. So the person writing the review could write an absolutely glowing review, but their peers could bring the actual rating down. I LOVED The Weeknd, like top 5 loved him.
I really like the album, and think it’s a return to form ;)Completely agree. I honestly thought this would be BNM-bait, but I hadn't seen the track reviews or else I would've known otherwise.Oh well, I’m obsessed with this album - it's converted me from ambivalence toward The Weeknd to standom. This album is damn near a masterpiece to me. But I just can’t place my finger on what is missing from this for me. Don’t fit the vibe of the album at all.And I’ll extend that to Until I Bleed Out and Heartless — they don’t fit. And the songwriting on songs like But 7.9 from Pitchfork is definitely a decent score, so I'm not complaining about the review per se.Completely agree. I was effectively trying to vindicate my opinion by measuring it against others, but soon realised that's a fruitless endeavour.I simply got more out of the album than other people did and that's cool. You will never be happy and sleep well again.’Swift stans have similarly gone after other music journalist reviews of the album. One fan responded to a tweet of the New York Times review of the album saying: ‘Uhmn huns this article is BIASED, written by someone who clearly stated that he’s a pop critic and also gave the lowest rating. It's a weird disconnect when you rate something 9/10 and are replaying every track, but other people are giving it 6s/7s across the board. You will be filled with your dark fears and demons. Blinding Lights, Save Your Tears, Hardest to Love, and In Your Eyes are all great, but I wish there was more of Alone Again, Faith, and After Hours.Hard agree. But the great ones are GREAT.I swear man, me and my friends were talking about this being his best album. Never would've expected such a vivid album experience from The Weeknd. 0PN’s remix is by far the grooviest thing I’ve ever heard from him, and the “””vaporwave””” remix of “Heartless” includes a pitched-down Uzi verse that somewhat satisfies my dream of a Future feature on the album. Metro Boomin, Illangelo, Kevin Parker, Max Martin, 0PN, and others form a formidable host of sound wizards to help The Weeknd execute his sultry, neon-streaked vision. The Weeknd’s performance is also commendable, of course - his voice and melodies are gorgeous and mesh seamlessly with the production to produce a distinct mood/aesthetic (and this is coming from somebody who has actively disliked his voice in the past). For mePitchfork assigns someone the task of writing the review, but the score is basically an average of what the entire staff rates the album to be.
